Friday 20th June- Saturday 21st June 2008
We decided to go to the Lakes overnight and as you can't book a pitch near Ambleside we simply set off on Friday afternoon. It was a wet and windy weekend in June so we were not ready for the fact that every campsite was full!! thankfully at Great Langdale as you can only park on the gravel path in the camper we got the last parking space and I mean the last! What a great campsite it is. National Trust run and actually quite basic but the views are mind blowing and there are 3 pubs in walking distance. It's not a great place though for chilling out as it is so busy and you are parked on the road side so you have no room to sit out. The sun shone a bit on Saturday morning but then the heavens opened - typical really for Ambleside. We had a very long breakfast in the Apple Pie cafe and I had the best bacon butty I have had in a long time. Two pots of tea later we decided to go walking anyway and did the Low and High Sweden bridges walk and I have to say it is the most
hilarious entry in a pathfinder book I have come across. The summary of the walk said it was perfect for a 'leisurely afternoon stroll' and it was coded green - we thought great nothing too bad in the driving rain. Oh boy!! part way through the instructions is the line 'proceed relentlessly uphill' and it was RELENTLESS - how an that be leisurely I ask you -and to make it worse even the sheep were struggling in the rain and huddled into the wall. we kept going though as the view was fantastic despite the weather and when we finished we rewarded ourselves with a whole lot of tapas at Lucy 4 afterwards before making the drive home!Details for those who are interested!
